13/12/2019: Now’s the time to develop some fresh thinking on net zero and build momentum

The last few weeks have been, well, rather distracting. But with a clear political majority secured, a binding legal target in place and a clear consensus from the election campaign for urgent action to address climate change, the new parliament must hit the ground running.

To help this process and to try to develop some much needed momentum, I am delighted to announce that Trilemma’s Simon Skillings and I will be hosting a discussion forum on a new framework for delivery of net zero on behalf of the Association for Distributed Energy (ADE). The event is entitled Delivering net zero and the new energy economy, and it is being kindly supported by law firm Squire Patton Boggs. It will take place at their offices at 7 Devonshire Square in London on 27 February 2020 (11.00-16.30, with light lunch provided).

I am delighted to say we will be helped by two exceptional industry figures. They are Professor Catherine Mitchell of Exeter University and Laura Sandys, who last week was the well-deserved recipient of the industry champion award at the 2019 Utility Week awards.

The event comprises a keynote speech and three facilitated panel sessions. The keynote will be given by Catherine, shortly to retire from Exeter University, who will look back on the learnings from a long and illustrious career of promoting decarbonisation and reform in the energy sector and what these learnings mean for the journey ahead.

The panel sessions will explore the need to reinvent policy, its governance and the delivery framework. Simon and I will separately run two of the panel sessions looking at both top-top and bottom-up delivery structures and enabling reforms as well as the need to think outside the box as we move forward. Laura will explain the imperative of building understanding and engagement enabled by data and information. Further details on panellists will follow shortly.

The event will be open to ADE members supplemented by speaker invites. But if you’d like to receive an invite, please respond to either this LinkedIn posting or direct message me on twitter at @newangliaenergy.
