BEIS published a Greater Manchester Local Industrial Strategy on 13 June, setting out long-term priorities to increase productivity in the region. Within the strategy is a five-year Environment Plan that sets out a long-term vision “to be carbon neutral by 2038”, and an intention to develop an Infrastructure Plan.
In terms of clean growth, Greater Manchester is launching the UK’s first city-region Clean Growth Mission to achieve carbon neutral living in Greater Manchester by 2038. The five-year Environmental Plan points to the opportunities around innovations that:
- improve the environment
- increase the energy efficiency of homes and buildings
- adopt new models of local renewable energy generation, and
- accelerate the implementation of energy and material efficiency measures by businesses.
The region will also develop a roadmap for digital-led innovations to enable better coordination of its transport system.
