Battery electric car registrations hit high market share

Electric car (EV) registrations tripled in July to hit a record monthly market share, according to figures released on 5 August by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The SMMT published new statistics that found, while the UK’s new car market had declined by 4.1%, reaching the lowest July market share since 2012, new battery electric car registrations were up 158.1% on last year.

The SMMT added that, with ongoing investment into new, more advanced powertrain technology, EVs were likely to double their market share in 2020 with 51,000 registrations. However, with this still representing just 2.2% of the overall market, it warned world-class, long-term incentives, supportive policies and substantial infrastructure investment was needed for the UK to realise its zero emission ambitions.
