Energy sector to have key role in global recovery, says energy minister

Energy Minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, has said the energy sector will play an important role in driving a “clean and resilient global recovery” beyond the current health emergency.

Kwarteng was speaking during the G20 meeting of energy ministers earlier in April, where he explained that the ongoing transformation of energy systems can secure livelihoods and drive development, while also delivering on the Paris Agreement. On the impact of COVID-19 specifically, Kwarteng said the UK energy sector has responded positively through implementing new measures and working practices to ensure a reliable energy supply and the resilience of the energy sector is maintained.

As well as welcoming actions taken by other G20 countries to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, Kwarteng stressed the UK is a strong supporter of “free and competitive energy markets” and highlighted the importance of ensuring “reliability, stability and security in supply”, noting the UK government will continue supporting stable, competitive markets to achieve this.
