The government has announced a new £220mn package to overhaul bus services, including the creation of the country’s first ever “all-electric bus town”.
It explained that the all-electric bus town would involve the entirety of the city buses in a location being changed to wireless electric vehicles. With regards to country buses, these would become hybrids – using electrical power when within the built-up area and diesel when outside. Benefits of this approach would include a cut in pollution and operating costs. A location for the all-electric bus town is still under consideration and being discussed with local authorities and operators. The government confirmed it will be announced at a later date.
Elsewhere, the package pledges low-fare, high-frequency “Superbus” networks and better passenger information, as well as contactless payment on every city bus.
