The government has launched a Green Jobs Taskforce o set the direction for the job market as the UK transitions to a high-skill, low carbon economy.
On 12 November, BEIS set out that the ambition for the taskforce is to support the creation of 2mn skilled jobs by 2030 as the UK aims to “build back greener” and reach net zero by 2050. It will focus on both the immediate and longer-term challenges of delivering skilled workers for the net zero transition. This includes ensuring that the immediate, necessary skills are in place for the UK to build back greener in areas such as offshore wind and home retrofitting.
Other priorities for the taskforce include the development of a long-term plan that charts the skills needed to help deliver a net zero economy; ensuring good quality jobs and a diverse workforce; and supporting workers in high carbon transitioning sectors, such as oil and gas, to retrain in new green technologies.
