Project looks to show benefit of local demand-side flexibility

Opus One Solutions has been awarded a contract by SP Energy Networks (SPEN) to demonstrate how local demand-side flexibility can help it better manage its network.

On 26 January, Opus One announced it will develop and deploy a system that focuses on engaging customers to provide system flexibility. It will do this by using the Universal Smart Energy Framework as a base and, by demonstrating how local flexibility markets can provide a fast, cost-effective tool, it will aim to assist SPEN in actively managing its network to deliver a better future for its customers.

The work forms an integral part of SPEN’s Project FUSION which is key element in its transition from a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to a DSO. In practice, it will allow participating customers to generate additional income by agreeing to be flexible with their energy usage or generation.

A market trial programme will take place over the next three years with the solution tested, first in St Andrews and East Fife until December 2023.
