Scotland’s net zero economy set for multi-billion pound investment

Crown Estate Scotland has announced the launch of the first round of offshore wind leasing in Scottish waters for a decade.

Making the announcement on 10 June, it said that the round, titled ScotWind Leasing, would form a key part of Scotland’s green recovery and offered a multi-billion pound investment opportunity. Specifically, it said investment in ScotWind Leasing projects could exceed £8bn, deliver enough green power for every Scottish household and lead to over 6mn tonnes of CO2 being saved each year.

It should also significantly increase the amount of power generated by offshore renewables – a key step towards meeting the Scottish government’s aim of a net zero Scotland by 2045.

Scotland’s Energy Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, said: “Our seas are host to some of the best offshore wind resources in the world, supporting the continuing growth and expansion of the sector. We want to harness this huge resource for our energy system, unlocking significant investment in the supply chain to create more green jobs across the sector and, importantly, to do so in a way that gives due regard to our marine environment and other marine activities
