SPEN set to launch “most advanced” 3D digital modelling of UK grid

SP Energy Networks (SPEN) has announced that it will soon launch the most advanced 3D digital modelling of the UK electricity grid.

On 2 August, it explained that by introducing Fugro’s virtual technology, it will be able to reduce the risk of power cuts and prepare for the introduction of the technology across the network in future. Fugro, a world leading geo-data specialist, will map the entire network using virtual world visualisation tools and help to identify where vegetation and other external factors could cause disruption.

The model is set to cover over 41,000km of SPEN’s network and provide a digital foundation to cut the number of on-site surveys and audits, while increasing efficiency in the business and reducing the chances of unexpected power failures in future.

SPEN added that use of Fugro’s Roames service will bring further benefits outside of the utilities industry, enabling government environmental departments to use data to provide better insights for ecology studies and vegetation management, as well as both national and local flood-modelling programmes.
