Northern Powergrid has joined forces with Hyperdrive innovation and Offgrid Energy to trial a system that could provide temporary electricity during power cuts in the UK.
The Silent Power trial – announced on 11 October – will see Northern Powergrid develop electric vans with on-board energy storage systems that can replace noisy and polluting diesel generators, either during power cuts or planned works. The vans will be able to restore power to up to three homes or a small community centre for up to 24 hours. Northern Powergrid said that the project – expected to last two years – could signal a huge clean energy shift in the temporary power industry.
Ross McFarlane, Innovation Project Manager for Northern Powergrid, said: “Alongside the direct customer benefit, we are very excited by the wider positive environmental impact of this trial. Many industries need temporary power supplies, if this can be shared across other sectors, we have another way to bring more renewable sources into our energy mix.”
