The UK and Italy are to collaborate as they look to host the UN’s 26th climate change conference (COP26) in November 2020.
COP26 is regarded as being the most important meeting on climate change since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. The joint bid was announced on Tuesday 18 June with the countries presenting a proposal for the UK to assume the Presidency of the 26th conference, in partnership with Italy. The bid would see the UK host the COP, while the pre-COP event would take place in Italy. The pre-COP event would include a significant “youth event” under the proposal, in recognition of the disproportionate impact that climate change will have on young people.
Both the UK and Italy are members of the High Ambition Coalition and supported the Statement on Stepping Up for Climate Action at COP24.
