UK businesses have been invited to apply for a share of up to £1.5mn to work with US partners on the $40mn US offshore wind development programme.
On 8 November, Innovate UK explained that despite the country’s offshore wind energy sector being world-leading and having seen huge growth, a tenfold increase in energy production from wind (75GW) will be needed to hit the 2050 net zero goal. This will mean further innovation is necessary to cut costs and improve performance. With many other countries facing similar challenges, Innovate UK is now calling on UK firms to work with US partners on innovative offshore wind technologies.
To qualify, UK projects must work with a US consortium that either intends or has already applied to the US offshore wind development programme. The competition itself aims to reduce technical barriers facing offshore wind farms.
The deadline for expressions of interest is midday on 15 January 2020, with all projects having to include at least one UK SME and total costs for UK projects having to be between £150,000 to £600,000.
