Professor Jason Furman has been tasked with setting up a new Digital Markets Unit by outgoing Prime Minister, Theresa May.
On 10 June, speaking at the launch of London Tech Week, May confirmed that the government would be moving forward with Furman’s recommendation for a specialised unit to regulate platforms designated as having strategic market status. Such a unit was one of the recommendations in Furman’s March 2019 report into how competition can be boosted in digital markets.
The goals of the Digital Market Unit would be to secure competition, innovation and beneficial outcomes for consumers and businesses in the digital economy. It would do this through such actions as encouraging data openness as a tool to encourage competition and having powers to impose solutions, monitor, investigate and sanction non-compliance.
